It doesn't matter much, but you typically begin with the slot furthest from the CPU. This is because each slot functions as an independent channel, especially when there are only two slots on the motherboard. It doesn't really matter whether you start with the first or second channel. With four slots, the slot farthest from the CPU (slot 4) corresponds to the second slot within a channel, while slot 2 is the second slot in the opposite channel. Installing RAM in the second slot of a channel first generally improves signal quality slightly.
