Determine if an upgrade is necessary for your B-450.
Your current B-450 THOMAHawk board supports the 3080 and 3090, so you don’t need to upgrade to B550 or 570. You can still use your existing motherboard.
If you choose the 5000 series CPU, you might need to check if your motherboard supports the BIOS update, but otherwise it should work fine.
Upgrading your board isn't necessary. PCIe supports both backward and forward compatibility. Expect cards to operate in PCIe Gen 3 instead of Gen 4, which will cut the GPU-to-CPU bandwidth in half. The GPU's speed remains unchanged. You may notice reduced performance in bandwidth-heavy tasks like moving large texture files, but it shouldn't significantly impact most games. By then, you'd likely need a CPU or GPU upgrade anyway.
