I arrived with some funds in difficult conditions and am trying to follow the instructions for handling this money. I plan to allocate it to my computer. I don’t really need much, but I’m considering purchasing another 2TB NVMe drive for my Steam setup. I already have a Sabrant 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive, and my operating system is installed there. I also possess a Western Digital SATA SSD and a Seagate HDD. My questions relate to my second NVMe slot on the motherboard. According to the manual, it connects via SATA. Can I install any NVMe drive and run it in that slot? For instance, could I use another Sabrant Rocket? Also, will the SATA connection affect its performance? Will it share bandwidth with my SATA SSD? Sorry, I have many questions about this. My main goal is to find out if buying a second NVMe drive is worthwhile.
If it's a SATA M.2 connection, an NVMe device won't work. Be aware you might end up losing a SATA III slot if you switch to M.2. TBQH, unless your build has space for more drives or you're fully using your SATA ports, it's not worth the effort. You can find a 2.5" SSD in the US around $165-170 at the 2TB price point. Likely more expensive on your end, but generally a 2.5" SSD offers better performance than an SATA M.2 version.
What kind of motherboard are you using? Currently, most support both SATA and NVMe connections in all slots. If it’s strictly SATA-only, connecting it to an SATA M.2 will function identically to inserting a regular SATA SSD into the available ports.
I don't have space for more than 2.5" drives anymore. The case originally had three extra bays, but I removed them since they clashed with my front panel connectors and audio card. Still, I can manage. My original 2.5" SATA SSD is firmly mounted at the top of the drive cage. If needed, I can use double-sided tape to secure another one on top—it might work, though it's a bit risky.
It seems both M.2 ports on the device are compatible with NVMe technology.
