I recently acquired one of the 4870HQ models that has been refurbished for LGA 1150 with a custom PCB. I plan to review its performance. They claim it offers an unlocked multiplier up to 41x, and there’s already someone on HWBOT discussing it running at 4.1GHz base clock—this will be worth checking out on my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 board. These units draw significantly less power than the desktop version, so cooling should be manageable. I’ll be using a 240mm AIO cooler, which I found impressive, and if I can reach 4.1GHz it could help me hit the 3D Mark achievement. I’ll aim for around 3.75 to unlock the overclock boost (+50% above base). I also intend to add some older AMD graphics cards for a 3-way XFire, hoping it becomes a fun, slightly unstable achievement getter.
