Using a switch, each patch panel connection links to a port on a network switch via a standard cable. Then attach a switch port to the LAN side of your modem. (Simple switches without advanced features don’t have inputs and outputs, so you can use whatever makes sense. I typically choose the first or last port for the modem just to keep cables organized.)

Yes, that's right. You're connecting from the router to the switch, then to the patch panels, and finally to different rooms.
