I've tried PIA and didn't encounter any dropouts. Are you certain the server isn't failing? It could be something else at play, like an ISP problem or an issue with pfSense.

When the link dropped, I opened the webgui and saw the VPN server was offline. I’m sure my internet stayed active since my friend was playing online. My PFSense device runs behind a Netgear router. It might be an issue with PFSense itself. Either way, I’m keen on setting up a failover solution.

Consider using a different server. The problem might be with your device or the ISP, not PIA. Have you tried enabling two VPN connections through PIA?

I also tried another server and it functioned properly. The original server came back online within a minute and was working fine. I don’t know what you meant by configuring VPN connections inside PIA. I set several up in pfSense, but the gateway status stayed pending and I couldn’t connect.

You're planning to configure a second VPN on PFSSL and set up dual WAN. I'm curious about your familiarity with PFSSL—would you consider checking for configuration issues by trying Untangle as well?

the manual i was following didn't cover dual wan. i wasn't sure how to handle that. i configured three pi servers in openvpn clients, set them up as interfaces, and placed them in a gateway group. then i adjusted the firewall and nat so all lan traffic had to go through the vpn gateway group. when checking the gateway status, it displayed the vpn interfaces as "pending," even though openvpn showed "up" on all three. i have limited experience with pfSense and only a bit else.
