I play SimRacing where performance counts more than quantity of cores. I’m considering the RTX 3000 Series and a new CPU. Still undecided between AMD or Intel, but I feel leaning toward Intel for its power. I haven’t heard much about Intel’s 11th Gen yet—I’ll need to look into this soon.
Sure, I’d like an RTX 3000 with NVENC. Honestly, I usually go with K but don’t overclock since I’m not sure about it. The i7-Base and Turbo Speeds are better than the i5. I tend to build PCs that last 3 to 5 years. My setup is a 3xWQHD Triple Screen plus streaming at 1080p, or VR with streaming. Do you think the i5 will handle that?
for ages 3 to 5 years i’d have more than 8 cores on my CPU. in three years games should already use 8 cores. get an i9 10900 or 10900f if you don’t mind, or better a ryzen 9 3900x. they’ll last longer than those older cores. i’m not sure how much longer, but i’d say a year or two.
The i5 should be enough, though I do get the appeal for 8C/16T more now since that's what the next-gen consoles will be using. I think you can enable MCE even on non-K chips (basically automated overclocking, which sets all cores to the single-core boost) but that's really not a great overclock per se, since it tends to skyrocket voltages for no reason. If you're not building now, and are waiting for Ampere GPUs, then by that time we might also have Zen 3 CPUs. If those beat or at least match Intel in gaming performance, that maybe might be a better choice. We'll just have to wait and see.

It could be slightly better, though not much. With AMD you’re sure there’ll be another processor lineup for AM4, whereas Intel might alter the socket again, which could mean higher costs later on.
I usually keep my PC for 3 to 5 years, so changing the socket is unavoidable. It doesn’t really matter to me. As I mentioned before, I don’t need a Fanboy—I only use what suits me best. I also set up a thread here to learn more about AMD because I often hear people saying “get AMD with less power for less money,” but that’s not true in Germany at least.
