I shared a discussion here, but the previous one was too detailed. I've kept it simpler. Recently, a strong thunderstorm passed with loud thunder. I thought I saw orange electricity near my computer or the surge protector plugged in. That happened at night, and I definitely noticed something. Then my laptop made a sound similar to unplugging and replugging a USB device. My setup includes a Sabrent port hub connected to one of the laptop's USB ports, a wired keyboard on another hub, and a USB-C video cable for HDMI to DVI. I unplugged the hub without properly disconnecting it, which caused the annoying noise. Later, my ASUS monitor connected to an HDMI to DVI cable stopped working and showed no signal. My primary monitor uses a USB-C display port connected to a 32" 4K Samsung screen, which is fine. My wired internet also failed, and the cable seems damaged—its smell suggests it’s burnt. I tried using the same HDMI to DVI cable on a Chromebook, but it worked there. On an XP laptop, I connected an HDMI to HDMI cable to a 32" screen and got no signal. Now I’m unsure what to do. Should I use two external monitors? Is the HDMI port likely bad? Would a $150 Thunderbolt display port work instead? Connecting it to one of the USB hubs might help, but what about my Ethernet connection? Could I replace the damaged cable or board? Probably not worth sending it to a repair shop. Should I consider buying a new laptop?
