Hi everyone, I’m using a 6-year-old laptop that’s still running smoothly. I was hoping you could assist in getting it back to life. This machine dates back to 2009 and has these specifications: Studio 1555 – Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz, 1066MHz, 3MB), Wireless – Europe, Dell Bluetooth 370, Display – 15.6-inch Widescreen HD (1366x768), WLED with TrueLife Camera, Graphics – 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 545v, Memory – 4096MB (2x2048) at 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Battery, Hard Drive – 500GB Samsung Evo 840, Wireless – Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n), and it originally came with Windows Vista pre-installed.

Vista was not great, but after Windows 7 arrived soon after purchase, it became my default OS for years. Recently, I noticed the laptop is quite slow compared to what it used to handle. I used to edit videos on Sony Vegas without issues—multitasking and virtual machines worked well. Now it barely functions. I can’t run programs like NetBeans or Eclipse, nor do I need Java development tools. The CPU and RAM are constantly at 100%.

Recently, the SSD only handled about 2TB of writes. I did a clean install last week, updated drivers from the manufacturer, but ignored Windows updates. Performance is poor—I can’t even run Firefox anymore. Previously, it handled video editing smoothly, but now it struggles. I switched browsers from Chrome to Firefox to ease memory use, though that didn’t fully solve the problem.

There are no background services running except Skype and Windows Defender. Installed apps include Firefox, Office 2007, and VLC. Yesterday, the system was overheating heavily due to the cooling fan running at full speed.

Is there any way to keep it running on Windows? I’m not sure if upgrading to a new laptop is the best option, but I’d prefer staying on Windows for now. For my needs—gaming, editing, programming—I’d really like to run Office, NetBeans, and Adobe Reader smoothly. Updating to Windows 7/10 doesn’t seem possible because of missing GPU drivers. Installing Ubuntu 14.04lts3 didn’t help much either; RAM usage stayed low (around 1GB), CPU around 10-20%. The GPU fan kept running nonstop in Windows, which isn’t happening on Windows itself. Web browsing also caused issues in Ubuntu.

I’m a Windows user, so staying on Windows would be the easiest choice. If you have any suggestions or steps I can take to keep it stable, that would be really appreciated. I don’t feel like switching to Linux right now.

Start with a fresh setup and upgrade the processor. Here’s a link to a compatible CPU: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-2-Ext...SwiwVWRQOX

Laptop requires a straightforward CPU swap. Windows setup is fresh, just a week old.

Issue involves Windows 7. Even after all updates, performance will degrade. To keep going, you must turn off all background tasks manually. I face a similar situation with my laptop—it lacks the processing strength to handle multiple applications or load many websites at once.
