It seems many people rely on outdated laptops for teens. Sometimes a touchpad problem stems from software issues instead of hardware faults. I've noticed this with several Alps and Synaptics models on HP Pavilion DV2000 and Latitude 3330. Restarting the device or powering it off unexpectedly usually resolves the issue, as it forces Windows to fully reload the driver. I suggest removing the Dell touchpad driver from Device Manager and reinstalling it.

You suspect Dell laptops might be the cause of your slow performance after a virus infection. While Dell devices typically don’t ship with malicious software, a recent software glitch could be responsible. I recommend updating the trackpad driver via Dell’s official support site to ensure compatibility and stability.

Avoid Alienware options. Consider testing if the touchpad functions within the BIOS settings, as Dell's BIOSes have been compatible with mice since about 2008. This applies unless they released a less effective BIOS for the Inspiron. If your BIOS appears this way, you may be able to adjust the mouse settings.

Check whether the trackpad functions within the BIOS settings. If it continues to move erratically, there may be a hardware problem such as a loose cable or a faulty trackpad.

The trackpad was swapped at a nearby store. It’s possible the person who did it used a faulty component or lacked proper knowledge. If you were charged for the replacement and it doesn’t function, I’d request a refund or have them fix the problem.

They fixed the laptop under warranty but didn’t replace the missing screw. They also seem to have overlooked the front, which might cause the trackpad to jam. Unless it’s on a flat surface, the issue could persist.

Bios doesn't resemble that, yet the mouse works fine. The mouse also functions there.
