I added an additional 500gb hard drive to my computer but placed it inside. When I leave, I turn it off in Device Manager so it doesn’t make any sound. Still, I hear a noise—like a fan or spinning—even though it’s disabled and not listed in Windows Explorer. To shut it down completely temporarily? Edit: The issue isn’t the laptop fan; the fan is visible through the bottom air vent and isn’t actually spinning.

Are you looking for additional storage or a temporary backup? A USB enclosure might fit your needs better.

I prefer not to purchase an additional hard drive and am utilizing the existing storage. Avoiding frequent disconnections is important for me.

You don’t have to purchase an entire hard drive, just a $12 SATA to USB adapter. USB 3.0 provides enough speed for a mechanical laptop drive. https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-External-E...B06XWRRMYX
