I’m trying to avoid using funds on this outdated site. Yet investing in it could mean getting a better cooler? I figured the CPU would benefit from a deli, which is completely free.
The TIM beneath the IHS plate is problematic; simply swapping it won't improve performance. It's well known among enthusiasts that removing and reinserting this component can significantly lower core temperatures.
I've worked with this CPU for quite some time, trying different cooling options. Once I had the poor Deepcool Captain installed, it reached 90°C quickly during Cine playback. Adding my noisy Delta fans helped a bit, but it came at a high price in terms of sound. Eventually, I switched everything out and built a complete custom water system with premium parts like an XTC radiator and a PMP-500 pump that circulated water instantly. This brought me down to the 20s and kept the peak under 70°C even during R20 sessions. Of course, a standard AIO wouldn't perform this well, but I pushed that CPU to its limits as well. A Liquid Freezer 420 paired with a suitable case could solve these problems and set the stage for better builds in the future.
Absolutely effective a tailored loop can be. I recently swapped my 8700K + 4267mhz Bdie for a new 12400F. It struggles with my upgraded 12400F and is using a stock cooler. You're right, don't invest in the platform right now. Save your money to achieve better performance, use less power, generate less heat, and get significant gains. -- But a little tweak could really help, save some cash along the way. Or at least think about where to spend wisely. A custom loop isn't worth it unless you're aiming for a 12900K or 5800X3D. Then you can afford both the gear and proper cooling.
