I discuss the memory slots numbered 1 through 4, where 1 is nearest to my CPU socket and 4 is the furthest, with channel 1 being 1 and 2, and channels 3 and 4 as the next. I run a 6600k processor that I occasionally boost overclock settings. The motherboard is MSI Z270 S02, the RAM is Corsair Dominator Platinum 2x8GB at 2666Mhz, the GPU is Palit Gamerock GTX 1080 purchased from a crypto miner, the boot drive is a 120GB WD Green SATA M.2 SSD 2280, and the power supply is Chieftec 650W CFT-650-14C. I left the system idle for about six months before restarting it. Recently, a RAM stick in slot 2 failed to work; after replacing it with another that worked from slot 4 to 3, everything functioned properly. After testing all slots and configurations, only slots 2 and 3 showed success. I cleaned the board, CPU, and RAM thoroughly using 99% IPA, yet nothing changed. The manual suggests slots 2 and 4 are ideal for dual sticks and dual-channel use. My home power isn’t perfect—usually around 230V—but it’s stable enough. Frequency readings hover between 50Hz and a slight drop of 0.03-0.09Hz.
