Hey, you're planning a Windows 10 upgrade. You're trying to figure out the best approach while deciding how long you can delay it. You have a 500GB Samsung SSD for the OS and some other files, plus a 1TB HDD for everything else. You're wondering if you can back up directly to the larger HDD right now, or if you should wipe the SSD and start fresh. It seems like reformatting and installing again might be necessary, but it’s not clear if any problems would arise from doing a regular upgrade versus a clean install. What are your thoughts? Which option sounds more practical for you?

Perform a clean setup and save essential files to an external storage device. Remove unnecessary items to improve speed.

New setup just arrived. Keep in mind, to obtain a free Windows 10 version you must first upgrade, after which you can perform a clean installation using the .ISO file.

Win 10 performs decently but lacks the smoothness of newer versions. The improvement from 7 to 10 isn’t dramatic enough to be a game-changer. Security-wise, it’s generally safe, though some updates may introduce minor risks. Disable features like Bluetooth or background apps if they cause annoyance.

It's interesting you're moving from version 7 to 10. Back in the past year, I attempted an upgrade from 7 to 8.1 but it kept failing five times—just freezing. Eventually I switched back to Windows 7 and ended up with 8.1. I guess I learned that a fresh ISO or boot drive copy is necessary for a clean install.

Absolutely, I'm still working through it. The boot time on my HDD used to be around 2-3 minutes, but it's now only about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

I haven’t noticed any improvement from version 8.1 to 10. Some features won’t install on Windows 10, which suggests I don’t have sufficient permissions yet—I do have admin access.

Sure, happy to help! I'll proceed with the upgrade using a new installation and create a bootable drive.
