I recently assembled a new system using a 5600x processor and a B550 motherboard, specifically the Biostar B550MH. Whenever the CPU experiences high demand and briefly slows to around 500Mhz, the clock speeds drop significantly. This behavior isn’t limited to artificial workloads like benchmarks; it also occurs during gameplay, though the frequency reduction is slower. Switching to the power mode “eco” extends the stable performance a bit more, but I usually reach about 10–15 minutes before the system freezes due to the extreme clock drops. After some research, I noticed others face similar problems, suggesting the board might have subpar VRMs. Could adding heatsinks or a cooling fan help? Unfortunately, the store declined my return request citing “physical damage” from a minor scratch on the board during installation. If anyone has practical advice, please share.
Searching your forum brought up a discussion about throttle issues linked to VRMs. Someone recommended checking the latest BIOS updates, which might let you adjust the VRM throttle temperature settings.
Consider upgrading to a higher-quality mobile component. You might also integrate a DIY VRM cooling solution using tape or zip ties over the VRMs while you build.
If issues arise, consider the Asus TUF B550-PLUS or TUF B550-PRO. The PRO model includes a 3.2 header, while the PLUS version does not. I own the PLUS in my 5900X setup and have had no problems, even with air cooling. Updated April 15, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added more details
Activate Eco Mode and position a fan above the VRMs, adding heatsinks if available. You may need to purchase heatsinks from Aliexpress or a similar site, as they might not be in stock otherwise.

Pretty unbeatable combo for $31 on US Amazon. https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.p...20&area=en https://www.arctic.de/en/P8-PWM/ACFAN00149A You don't need to run fans fast, there's no need for cold air, high airflow, hot airflow is good airflow, just having any at medium speeds will help the VRMs greatly. And you can reuse it for years, decade to come, and don't have to worry about overheating VRMs. Downdraft cooler would help, a bit. and putting heatsinks and zip-tie-ing a fan like mentioned above would help eve more, but, the above is a non-janky way to get that VRM under control. Just those two parts above will do the job swimmingly.
