Looking into the 12700K, I haven’t found any reviews comparing DDR4 and DDR5 memory. For gaming at 4800MHz, DDR4 tends to perform slightly better than DDR5, though the difference is usually small. I don’t see much evidence that switching to DDR5 offers a noticeable boost for games. One video you mentioned suggested DDR4 might edge out DDR5 in performance, but results can vary by test conditions.

Right now, DDR5 doesn't offer any advantages for gaming. It'll be some time before DDR5 matches the speed of DDR4. A DDR5 4800 provides about the same performance as a DDR4 3200.

Especially with how hard it is to get, no point yet.

DDR4 tends to work better right now. Future updates might favor DDR5 for games, but we're still unsure about that. The unboxed content covered both DDR4 and DDR5 testing in their video. https://youtu.be/WWsMYHHC6j4

Hardware initially matched DDR3 in performance, but full capabilities emerged gradually. The same pattern is repeating with the first generation of DDR5.

It relies mainly on pure latency for its performance. The bandwidth isn't sufficient to meet the required cas latencies. Also, DDR5 is only compatible with at least gear2 mode, which limits memory controller clocks by a factor of 1:2. In contrast, DDR4 works in gear1 with DDR4 4000-4266, offering a 1:1 ratio.

It depends on your needs; running DDR4 at higher speeds isn't always better and may not offer significant gains. The optimal frequency often falls between 4000–4200 MHz, with performance peaking around that range. CL numbers play a key role in determining stability and speed.

With AlderLake, you can install a DDR4 4000 module offering the lowest possible CL and operate it in Gear 1 mode.
