Recently DDR5 DIMMs have become quite expensive, so I explored an alternative: using affordable used 8 GB DDR5 SODIMMs and connecting them through a budget adapter. I’ve tried this with DDR3 and DDR4 adapters before — everything worked fine. Most 8 GB DDR5 SODIMMs are inexpensive because they’re rarely in demand; they’re too compact for modern laptops, and people seldom use them in desktops. Since these chips are often sold second-hand at a fraction of the cost of new full-size modules, this approach seems more economical. Of course, I’m aware that overclocking or fine-tuning RAM isn’t feasible here—the traces are longer and DDR5 is generally more sensitive. For testing, I purchased several used SODIMMs for about 22 USD each, plus a converter for roughly 10 USD. I connected them to a 9800X3D, which is relatively forgiving in speed (about a 1–10% drop from 6000 to 4800 MHz during normal gaming at 1600p). I verified the voltage and pin configuration, and everything matched the original specs—so a passive adapter should function with DDR5. The main concern is the longer traces, especially for AMD systems that are more sensitive due to weaker IMC. This seems like a temporary fix until DDR5 prices stabilize. It would be ideal for an office PC or a light-gaming rig. With two modules, I reached 4800 MHz, but with four it drops to 3200 MHz—still stable for hours of gaming without any crashes. Temperatures stayed low, and everything performed well. What are your thoughts?

At 3200mhz it’s quite unstable. However, 4800mhz is acceptable for a standard desktop—you’d benefit from more RAM. It’s unlikely you can push it much higher because DDR5 has limitations related to CPU distance. This is why laptops with SODIMMs often can’t reach such speeds. Using an adapter on a desktop probably won’t help much :p. Still, it works and performs well!

It’s an interesting trial, though I wouldn’t try it on my own system or any other. The 9800X3D claims no sensitivity to RAM speed, but I assumed it might be more about latency. I can share how performance varies if you’d like.

This triggers a discomfort in my body. 8GB RAM modules, dual-density PCIe, just 3200 MHz. That outdated 9800X3D is really not up to the task.

I cannot display performance variations. In actual testing, 4800 versus 6400 shows only a few percent difference at 4K, suggesting around 5-10% when not CPU constrained. At half the price, a -5% drop seems acceptable. I still wouldn’t suggest it for non-X3 processors. The AMD 9800X3D defaults to 3600 with four sticks; all are overclocked, but 3200 is reasonable. I know this is high, but the trace length is too long for DDR5 and that’s the main issue. These are Samsung chips, which aren’t ideal for AMD. I attempted 3600-4800 settings but failed, though many options remain. With two modules it runs at 4800 by default, but I feel 2x8GB RAM isn’t sufficient. A slower 32GB would be preferable over a faster 16GB. Two 16GB modules seem better. If solving the 4800 clock speed proves difficult, I’ll focus on timing improvements. Latency should drop noticeably around 3200 CAS20. Currently, 3200 CAS26 matches 5600 CAS46 mathematically but suffers in bandwidth. No significant lag was observed during games, though at 1600p 60Hz it might not be ideal. (I used a GTS450 and removed my 5070Ti to ensure safe RAM handling.)

If anyone wants to share their thoughts, please do so constructively. This isn’t about timing or voltage—it’s about signal integration and training. It appears to be the JET-5669 adapter, though it seems like a low-quality copy. It was still significantly cheaper than the standard dimmers—around 32 USD for both the adapter and the socket. The performance is quite slow, but it's adequate for an office computer. Still, that's only a partial win, so I'm exploring further options.
