I was planning to assemble a new PC when the 3000 series launches from NVIDIA, but I learned Samsung will drop DDR5 memory next year. That makes me question whether it’s worth waiting. I’m not against patience, but I’m curious about the value of DDR5. RAM definitely matters because Ryzen relies on it heavily, so switching to DDR5 should noticeably boost performance.
ddr5 will also need a different motherboard and a new CPU line. For AMD, the next 4000 series remains on AM4 using DDR4. The 5000 series is expected on AM5 with DDR5, but it hasn't been revealed yet—probably not before late 2021 or early 2022. I don't think Intel will have any options that support DDR5 by then either.
Before DDR5 memory becomes common in consumer devices, it will likely take several more years before it’s widely available and affordable. The timing depends largely on whether you require a PC or not. Constant updates mean you’ll probably have to wait a long time for anything new.
It's likely 2022 will see DDR5 chips in phones thanks to SoC integration for efficiency. RAM upgrades may follow, while server processors could arrive around that time. Cadence is rolling out a DDR5 update at 4800 MT/s with more than 12 SoCs in development, including EUV techniques.
