It's strange considering how crucial the motherboard is, yet I struggle to make sense of spending so much on one. Even when ignoring other factors, the performance gap between a $200 and a $700 board isn't significant, or if it is, it's mostly about small details. I'd prefer a larger SSD and speeds under 100mhz instead of a more expensive board.
MSI is applying 12-14 phases on all components, which should suffice. The power consumption there indicates a budget build with a 12600k unit (and an OC room not available in the 12900k), clearly outpacing most options. It seems unnecessary to invest in a high-end motherboard for just 200w these days. Intel has shifted from D15 to 280mm to 360mm as minimum cooling specs for the last two or three generations. I hope AMD will bring back more practical designs. I’ll keep my enthusiasm in check until we see more mature DDR5 support, and I’m planning to get a next-gen GPU for both current builds—what do you think?
I have a midrange board on my 10900k with a decent 5.1 GHz all-core OC. It's a 12-phase Dr.MOS 60A chip and I'm happy with it. When compared to the 12600k or 12900k in games, 1440p gives me roughly a 10% edge over a stock 10900k. A bit less than what you'd see with a modest overclock. Probably won't act on this right now; I'll wait until I upgrade my graphics. For real value, I'd need at least a 20% boost in performance when paired with other parts. With just a 3080 at 1440p, it doesn't seem promising. Considering how tough it is to find GPUs, by the time next-gen chips arrive, 14th gen Intel will likely be out.
I own an i9 12900K and have just purchased an RTX3080ti. I’m still unsure whether to go with DDR4 or DDR5—I really want DDR5, aiming for around 64GB. In the UK there aren’t any options yet, which is surprising. It’s crazy! I plan to buy the case and PSU soon, and I hope then more stock and faster speeds of DDR5 will become available.
