DDR5 chips might be scarce, similar to GPUs. You recently purchased the 12900K and a ROG Maximus Hero, but MemoryExpress currently doesn’t have DDR5 availability.
It marks the debut of the sole platform supporting DDR5 right now. Availability with a broad range will take some time. Still, it looks like DDR4 high-speed/low-latency in Gear 1 matches or exceeds DDR5 in Gear 2. This might not be ideal if you already have a DDR5 board, but you could consider upgrading.
It seems like you're planning to wait, maybe for a better moment.
It's actually nearer the mid-range of the Z690 lineup, unfortunately. I own a Z590 model and recall buying it for $239. Intel's CPU prices are significantly reduced when paired with costly motherboards; you can't just drop any compatible board onto them and expect solid performance like with the B550. That's a notable limitation of this platform.
I paid $760 for the Asus Hero board, which seems really high. I was hoping to make the biggest improvement possible for Warzone and boost my FPS.
I received the same setup as you—12900K with Hero board—and have a small 8GB Crucial DDR5-4800 stick arriving soon. (Amazon Canada preorder available...) It’s the only DDR5 I noticed for preorder last week. Looks like more/better DDR5 models won’t be here for a few weeks.
