I'm planning to upgrade my CPU and motherboard, likely getting a 13600k and a Z690 M.2. I'm curious about videos comparing gaming performance changes after switching from DDR4 to DDR5. Did anyone experience real improvements? Also, is there much benefit to switching to DDR5 if it doesn't significantly boost performance for most users? Lastly, with my 2133 MHz 2x8GB setup, would moving to a 3600 MHz kit make a noticeable difference? I've heard modded Minecraft really appreciates fast RAM speeds.

When dealing with a slow DDR4 system such as a 3200MHz CL16, DDR5 will generally offer superior performance. For high-end configurations like Samsung B-Die tuned to 3600/3800 CL14, the choice hinges on the specific game. Titles that emphasize low latency tend to perform better with DDR4. If you’re mainly playing single-player games with ray tracing enabled, the additional bandwidth of DDR5 becomes more advantageous. A lengthy explanation suggests DDR5 is usually preferable since most users aren’t motivated to manually adjust a Samsung B-Die DDR4 setup to unlock its full potential. Regardless, avoid purchasing inexpensive RAM unless necessary. In my experience, I opted for DDR4 initially because I already had a very fast setup. Switching to DDR5 would have added roughly $200–300 in cost between the premium board and a quality DDR5 kit. Current pricing indicates DDR5 is often the smarter investment for most builds.

It varies by title, but fewer titles struggle with DDR5 compared to DDR4 now. With faster DDR5 options available at reasonable costs, choosing DDR5 in a new build seems logical. A 13600k using DDR4 3600 offers only marginal gains over DDR5 6400; yet, certain games like CP2077 are especially affected. As always, higher performance brings diminishing returns. Unless you already own DDR4, it doesn’t make sense to stick with it in 2022.
