Quad-rank sticks are extremely uncommon and are typically seen only on servers, according to my understanding. Yes, combining four of a dual rank stick can enable quad rank functionality across two channels, though it may slightly reduce the stick’s maximum speed because the CPU memory controller and the board have to handle additional tasks. There are two main types of board topologies: VERY important to use 2 and 4 over 1 and 3, as 1 and 3 can’t match the performance of a daisy chain when all four DIMMs are used together.
Use Dual Rank sticks in every one of the four slots for Quad Rank. These sticks aren't available on regular consumer boards, so you'll need two sticks to reach Quad Rank or four sticks for Octa Rank.
