In your existing setup you run two 2x8 DDR4 modules at 4400MHz on XMP. You're considering adding another pair of 2x8 or switching to a 4x8 configuration for 32GB. Would it be more efficient to go with 4x8 or stick with 2x16? Your current system uses MB-GIGABYTE Z690 Gaming X DDR4, paired with a 16GB 2x8 module and an i9-13900 processor, powered by a 850W Gold Cert PSU and a Corsair EVGA 3080TI GPU.

Performance gain likely under 5%. Quad channel support available on HEDT and servers like EPYC, Threadripper, Intel X79/X99/X299/W790.

You determine the benefit or uplift by comparing outcomes between groups, usually using statistical models to isolate the effect of a treatment or intervention.

Four memory slots don't guarantee quad channel. You require a motherboard and CPU that can handle more than two channels. This is usually absent in consumer systems, which only offer two slots per channel. While it might allow dual or even quad rank, it doesn't equate to quad channel. Using four sticks makes it tougher for the CPU's built-in memory controller to manage them effectively. A 2x16 configuration has a better chance of achieving strong overclocking compared to 4x8, and clearly, 4x8 isn't the same as quad channel. Therefore, 2x16 is generally the superior choice.

I evaluated it against a 2x16GB model; the expenses didn’t make sense. Running tests with 4x8 and 2x16 showed better results.

Thanks for the details, I'll start with a solid 2x16 setup. Appreciate the tips! I'll reuse my 2x8 viper for future projects.

Consider an alternative approach: purchasing a 16GB stick and pairing it with your existing 2x8 sticks on another channel. This setup provides dual-channel functionality effectively, and if the 16GB model supports dual-rank, you'll gain the additional 2R performance boost.
