I'm working on improving my dad's old setup by adding more RAM, moving from 8 to 16 GB. The processor is an Intel Core i5 2320, and it currently uses dual-channel memory. I can't locate DDR3 sticks that are clocked below 1600 MHz, and the motherboard doesn't support XMP. Should I go ahead and buy 1600 MHz RAM in a system that supports either 1066 or 1333 MHz depending on the CPU? Would it perform similarly to DDR4, with the memory clocking down to 1333?

Since you already mentioned that your processor is an Intel i5(15?) 2320 the FSB of your CPU dictates a maximum of 1333. Now, we have only one more variable here for us to conclude if your RAM sticks will just be clocked-down or not. And that would be your motherboard. It would be best if you can share the exact brand, model and version of the motherboard in this particular system of yours. Thanks.

The BIOS lists four available slots, which is unusual for a typical business tower from HP.

He believes the BIOS might be misleading. It's possible, though unlikely, for someone to suspect a problem without fixing it.

Your RAM can only process data at 1333Mhz. Most OEM boards are designed to work with the CPU's specifications.
