Trying to determine if I can bring this worn-out DDR2 board back to life and run modern games smoothly is all that matters. The motherboard is a K9 SLI with DDR2 support, and while it has some potential, I’m unsure if upgrading to 8GB RAM will be sufficient. My goal is simply to get the machine functioning again—maybe even pushing it to higher settings. I’d expect to be able to add 16GB or more, up to 32 if possible. I’m aware most people wouldn’t want to see a DDR2 board handling modern titles, but I’m willing to tackle the challenge. Upgrading everything will likely require a 750-watt power supply, but it could be worth it!

Well, it seems you're thinking about using an DDR2 board. For that, you'd probably end up with outdated processors like Core 2 Duo, Quad, and possibly first-gen Intel chips. I didn’t notice it was an AMD board. Haha! Feel free to share your updates too—I’m curious about it.

The board was released in 2006, twelve years prior, featuring standard caps and no assurances of future support. The peak CPU was an Athlon 64 X2, which wouldn’t suffice for modern demands. With only 8GB DDR2 RAM, the system would be severely limited. The PC2-6400 offered... you’d likely spend more on locating the outdated components than purchasing a newer model. While I usually try to exceed hardware limits, by then it’s often a dead end. Comparing options, the Athlon 64 x2 5000+ seems like a solid choice, and the C2Q Q9400 outperforms it in every aspect. Both listings on eBay are available for less than $10.

I'm trying to run the Athlon 64 x2 5000+ on my board. It starts up but struggles to load Windows 10. I have 10 GB of DDR2 RAM and a SLI configuration with two 470 graphics cards. They appear to work, but I'm still unable to boot Windows. Is there a more suitable Windows version available?

Windows 7 should function without issues. For a lighter option, consider Windows 2003 which supports drivers for Windows 7. Memory limitations mean you'd be limited to 8 GB, making upgrades impractical. Purchasing additional hardware isn't really necessary here.

It's using over 8GB, but it's currently handling 10GB on the board.
