I was working on a laptop trying to reset a local user account password. Initially, I used chntpw with Ubuntu but later attempted NT Password Reset via Hiren's BootCD PE without success. In my final attempt, I clicked "Unlock" along with "Change Password" in NT Password Reset, but the system would blue screen during Windows 10 boot and show a System License Violation error. When I tried safe mode, it didn’t differ. Since I didn’t back up the SAM file, reinstalling Windows might be the best option.

An older Windows XP KB (KB307545) explained how to restore a damaged registry, and it seems the SAM hive file might still be useful. There could be newer KB updates for your current Windows version, or alternative methods to recover.
