Damaged pins on the Ryzen 9 3900x chipset
Alright, well, I was reapplying thermal paste aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... Well, I took out the cooler and it was stuck to the CPU, I realized this too late and thus ripped my Ryzen 9 out of the socket and bent some pins. Upon trying to gently bend them back, some broke off, and some more got bent. Anyway it doesn't work at the moment. However, I was curious if anyone knows some place that I could ship it to and have them fix it? -- or, if it's even valuable anymore so I could at least cut my losses a little? Any advice? Thanks. Much appreciated. Edit: I also tried calling alllllllllllllllll my local computer places and they couldn't help at all. Even the not-so-close ones.
Yeah, I don't have the tools or experience to repair it myself, unfortunately. I can't even find a "for parts" listing either, so I've no clue what I'd even set the price at. Not to mention I'm pretty scared of using Ebay to sell stuff. Appreciate the input, though.
The solder joints are intact, though I've fixed a few before—still tougher than working with an LGA socket. Where exactly are the broken pins?
Well, this isn't the worst I've encountered, but considering the cost of the CPU it's quite a deal. Those pins will likely need replacement. Unfortunately, few people do this kind of work—it's pretty frustrating and risky. If you mess up, you might damage many pins. It's safer to use a hot air rework station instead of a soldering iron; in fact, I don't think a soldering iron is really useful except for cleaning the pads after removing old pins. The ones that are severely bent probably shouldn't be fixed.
If you're looking for a cheaper option, finding someone to repair it might save money, but otherwise you'll probably have to buy a new one. Because this kind of repair is so uncommon, you're unlikely to find someone willing to do it cheaply even for $50 unless they're just experimenting.
I've noticed folks installing CPUs into LGA sockets, but replacing the socket is really tough work, the tools cost a lot, and at least uPGA can be handled smoothly with a steady touch.
The likelihood of a complete failure is far lower than the odds of something going wrong like shaking, dropping the CPU or screwdriver onto the socket, or dealing with tricky spring contacts. I don’t agree with that claim.
