Maybe someone has already considered this, though perhaps not. Wouldn't it be fun if the Keanu Reeves character were actually a replayed memory from Johnny Mnemonic (the story/movie is set in 2021) or maybe the whole narrative unfolds in a future Matrix version?

I believe when I play through it I’ll act like he’s a more experienced version of Johnny Mnemonic unless the story changes that, just to make my experience better.

Additionally, we might say it happens in the same world as System Shock, which originally took place in 2072.
