Recently I received a 300mbps internet connection and wanted to share the results with friends, but the speed reported on Speedtest.net didn't match what my Steam downloads showed. I also saw 34.6 MB/s on Net.tv, yet Task Manager displayed 305 Mbps. Speedtest.net seems to be giving different numbers. What could explain this discrepancy?

Have you considered switching to a faster server nearer your area?

Speedtest usually chooses the nearest server with the lowest ping, but that might not always be the fastest for downloads or uploads. Try using different servers in your region to check for better performance. Other background downloads or devices could also affect the results.

Many servers are operating at speeds under 200, with some even below 160.

the only device of that type is connected, and no files are being transferred in the background.

The variation could be around 150MBPS, isn't that significant?

Most providers use traffic management to handle excessive usage on certain servers. Your region may affect how well the ISP connects to the broader system. Such issues become more common at higher speeds, especially above 100mbps.

Additionally, your ISP could even serve as the local host for the Steam content you're downloading.

Always question one speed test provider; sometimes sites fail to capture accurate results. I usually rely on http://dslreports.com/speedtest/ for more reliable data. If you're seeing decent speeds from Steam, you probably don't need to worry too much.
