Hello everyone! This could be a bit confusing, but please understand—I’m just starting out with PC builds. For the past eight years I only used laptops. I recently got a Ryzen 5900X and installed it in a NZXT X73 case, using a Lian Li O11 as the side intake. The BIOS shows PBO is turned off. When I run Cinebench R23, all cores run between 4400-4450 MHz, temperatures spike to 86°C right away, then gradually climb to 90°C before leveling off. The HWinfo reports a voltage of about 1.25V. The NZXT fans are linked to CPU_FAN and spin around 2000 RPM at 90°C, while the pump runs near 2700-2800 RPM. I’m trying these settings to cool the CPU down. Are the temps normal? I’d like to render with this setup but worry about running it overnight knowing it’ll stay around 90°C. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

5900X features 12 cores, but running at 4.5GHz will generate a lot of heat—only monitor if temperatures exceed 95°C.

I don't agree. If the room temperature isn't around 40°C, that's quite high for a 360mm AIO. My Scythe Fuma 2 with a Phantex P300A and extra front fans can maintain low to mid-70°C at stock speeds while running R23 when the outside is in the low 20°C range.

It's actually quite warm here. I don't have any readings to check, but it feels pretty hot. Plus, both the fans and the pump are running at full speed, and the BIOS tells me PBO is turned off, which makes me wonder why the temperatures are so high.

High room temperatures raise CPU temperatures since the liquid cooler relies on ambient air for cooling. Consider these simple checks: Have you taken off the protective plastic layer from the cold plate? Does your machine get enough fresh airflow? Is it placed on a level surface with ample space around it, or is it buried under furniture or carpet, with the intake facing a wall? Is the air movement arranged to push in cool air and expel hot air—typically having fans on opposite sides of the radiator? For example, the case fans should face the opposite direction of the radiator fans. EDIT: I found out that the X73 includes pre-applied thermal paste inside a plastic casing, eliminating any film to remove.

Thermal transfer is simpler than it often seems. Begin at the start and verify each part. Is your pump installed properly with quality thermal paste? If not, focus on that first. If the room temperature is high, you won’t get much heat into the air. How does your case’s airflow behave? Are there exhaust fans removing hot air? A 360mm AIO should provide sufficient thermal inertia to avoid sudden temperature changes. Immediate spikes in temperature usually point to a poor cooler or CPU mount.

Keeping CPB on while turning off PBO could give better control, especially if you’re sensitive to temperature spikes. Bullshit. A 360 AIO works fine on a non-OCed R9 5900x. I own both and use an H150i for cooling. It’s possible the pump isn’t functioning properly or there could be a bubble inside it, blocking coolant flow to the radiator. There should also be poor contact between the cold plate and the CPU. @NoodleGangsta, please share a picture. Need some Hi-res close-ups and shots from farther away.
