I explored different perspectives to see which CPU would suit this scenario best. An AMD 5600X with six cores or twelve threads, or the 5700G with eight cores and sixteen threads. Dual monitors at 1080p—1440p occasionally in 2023—were in play. Gaming on one while streaming YouTube or live TV on the other. Some video editing and encoding tasks were involved. With 1080p resolution, PCIe speed differences aren't huge, so choosing the 5700G with Gen 3 PCIe wouldn't be a major upgrade over the 5600X using Gen 4. From what I've noticed, frame rates are generally similar across the board. AsRock B550M Steel Legend RX 6600 paired with Corsair Vengeance RAM at XMP speeds (3200mhz/CL16) on a 700W PSU would handle GTAV, Destiny 2, and The Hunter Call of the Wild at full settings.
They’re focusing on options that match the available hardware, not just the highest specs. For the RX 6600, using a PCI-E 4.0 x8 card is important because it needs PCI-E 3.0 x8 to function properly.
In my thoughts, jumping from the 5600X to the 5700X or 5800X seems like a modest improvement rather than a significant leap. It feels like just a small step forward instead of a major change. I’m considering the 5900X in the near future because I expect the price to drop or if not, I’d switch to AM5/Zen 4. Since AM4 appears to be a limited option now, the 5900X seems like the best choice for future-proofing without breaking the bank. Having an iGPU would help with troubleshooting if any problems arise in the future. I experienced issues where SmartAccess Memory would crash my system with the RX 6600 and 5600X together, nearly forcing me to return the CPU. Disabling SmartAccess Memory avoided the hassle of a return but might have missed deeper issues. My main interest lies in comparing the core/thread differences—more cores and threads are often emphasized—but I’m curious about whether sacrificing the 16MB L3 cache for 8 cores/16 threads on the 5700G is worth it compared to the 6-core/12-thread version with a larger 32MB cache.
I don't have either of those models. Would you consider contacting AMD support regarding your 5600X? They can process an RMA for either the CPU or GPU. It's not available. If you're planning additional cores, avoid a sidegrade and opt for a genuine upgrade such as the 5800X or better—like the 5800X3D if you already own a 5600X and wish to upgrade later.
