I just saw a ClabRetro video showing someone working with phone line equipment. It looks like one device at a time would be tricky, but a 2600 router lets him send IP over those lines. That sounds handy, though I’m wondering what you’d do if your home’s 56k connections suddenly became useful for something else.

Connect the doorbell to the existing wiring system.

I was considering something like that... probably install wire modems and set up a network for text messaging, maybe using MSN. Or configure DNS on Phones and store data over Ethernet. Not sure what to do next.

It's possible to set up a 10Mbit Ethernet network, but you'll likely need additional equipment like another router to maintain good internet performance. This could make it a great proof-of-concept project.

The main scenario I see is using old modems or dial phones for retrocomputing. It’s possible, though it doesn’t add much value.

It's not really about "Peak Realism." The main idea is a cool concept I used to discuss in Tek Syndicate forums—it's become more common there now.
