Hello, I'm curious about the time it takes for developers to build high-end games such as Witcher 3 or Far Cry 5. Even without a precise figure, it's interesting to understand the effort involved. Thanks for your interest!
I hold a B.S. in Game and Sim Programming. Typically, people expect a 3 to 5 year timeline from start to finish. This doesn’t reflect the real time or effort involved. A team of 300 can complete a single project in three years, while a 3,000-person team can significantly accelerate the process. That’s why there are around 150 to 500 people involved in a game at various stages of its development. It’s a massive undertaking, not just a minor investment for AAA studios. There’s a strong motivation behind maximizing revenue from these games.
I believe GTAV took more than six or seven years to develop. Usually it's two to three years. Large titles often span five to six years. Call of Duty takes about three years but involves multiple teams, so a new one appears yearly. A smaller game like Planet takes around four years.
