I am not an expert on this, but I'm assembling a gaming setup for my grandson's 16th birthday. He has no budget and can only imagine. His existing system is outdated. Based on my research, here’s what I’m putting together for him:
Corsair 5000D case
Asus X670E-E motherboard
Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor
Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5 64GB RAM
WD Black 1TB SN850X SSD
Cooler Master ML240L liquid cooler
MSI Mag 850 GL power supply
RTX 3060 graphics card
Should this last for a few years?
Any suggestions on improvements I could make? I understand the GPU isn’t top-tier, but he can upgrade later if he wants.
Thank you

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D stands out as the top choice for gamers seeking high performance. This processor features eight powerful cores housed in a single chip, complemented by 3D VCache for enhanced speed. Priced around $450, it outperforms competitors like Intel's 13900K and even the 7950X3D. The review highlights its status as the fastest gaming CPU currently available.

More even distribution of components is needed. The focus should be more on the GPU and storage rather than just the CPU, memory, and motherboard.
The 4000D chassis is acceptable if that matches the desired appearance.

Alternative suggestions for durability are worth thinking about. To ensure longevity, it would be best to opt for a GPU with sufficient VRAM, so the system remains functional for several years.

I support the prevailing direction of choosing a 7800X3D configuration, which remains the top gaming CPU available at present and should remain reliable for many years. I adapted Why_Me's setup by exchanging RAM and storage components to essential elements, and they have not let me down recently. I also replaced the RTX 4070 Super with an RX 7900 GRE, offering a strong value compared to current GPU options when ray tracing isn't active. The monitor remains the same as the one from Lucky_sls. I removed the Windows installation from the build cost; it's still necessary but you don’t have to include it alongside all other components.
