Place the pf sense box right after the ISP section and before the wireless router. This allows you to switch the router to AP mode easily. I’d prefer not to use double NAT unless necessary, to avoid future complications.

I prefer not to have it running continuously online because of its high energy use. The firewall is just for Nextcloud and other VMs, which I access remotely via SSH.

Avoid installing PfSense on a virtual machine. For better performance, purchase a used computer and connect it with two network cards.
