Creating a functional setup with a 500 USD budget
Creating a functional setup with a 500 USD budget
My computer stopped working after nearly 15 years. It performed well during its time.
Now I’m looking to buy a solid PC that can handle most older games without needing modern upgrades.
I want something suitable for titles like Skyrim SE (with mods), Crusader Kings 3, Football Manager, League of Legends, Dark Souls series, GTA V, and similar games from the 2000s.
What suggestions do you have?
Do you have a nearby Microcenter with some package offers? However, 500 is quite limited.
500 dollars for every component.
Are you insisting on new parts as well as "viable"?
How much are you prepared to reduce your expectations?
Motherboard, RAM, CPU, power supply, drive—definitely.
Maybe a case, cooler (unless it comes with the CPU), video card (if you can't manage graphics with the CPU), and operating system.
My two opinions:
1; wait until you can spend more than 500.
2; cut your expectations in half.
You might manage to assemble something if you only need the motherboard, RAM, CPU, power supply, and a drive—just five items.
I’m not sure about the integrated graphics on a semi-modern CPU handling those games you mentioned.
Of course, you could run into issues at a local used market—Ebay or similar.
boxed 5600 with cooler + second-handed b450, 125$
6600xt, 145$
8gx2 d4 mem, 30$
reliable 1t tlc ssd, 60$
box of your shoes as a case, 0$
reliable 650w psu, 70$
remaining 70$, adjusting prices for items based on your area. This is the price in my region.
Search for Lenovo refurb units.
I discovered this one on Newegg that seems to match your requirements at a reduced cost:

It's not a good time to hunt for deals near Christmas. The best approach is to hold off until next year. You could assemble something similar to an AM4 socket G skew—likely an A520 motherboard, a questionable Thermaltake Smart PSU, and the cheapest RAM and storage drive available. It would also use an OS with a watermark.
I've been checking online and discovered that an intel i5 Core 1040f GPU paired with a GTX 1650, although outdated, should still perform adequately for the games you plan to play—such as CK3, Football Manager, GTA V, and especially Skyrim SE. Would I need to be concerned about their lifespan if they were second-hand? And are they new?
Consider that the Intel 10th gen is already roughly five years outdated. For a limited budget, I could suggest socket am4 from AMD. Although am4 is largely obsolete, it still offers good CPUs for that setup, along with boards and DDR4 memory, which should be fairly affordable.
