I've been working on creating a bootable Linux USB for testing and fixing PCs, laptops, etc. I spend a lot of time on this during my free hours and it's great that you don't have to carry a big SSD. I'm new to Linux but managed to install Slax on a small 2GB USB stick with USB 2.0. Everything starts up normally (maybe drivers auto-install?). However, when I tried a benchmark tool, the whole system shut down. Since I'm just starting out, could you help me set this up for benchmarking?

You might not be familiar with Linux, but consider using a USB 3.0 drive with more space.

They only ran a live CD once and aren't sure if it's still done. Any Gnome-related software requires a proprietary driver, which isn't listed on any public live CDs, so it's unlikely they offer that.
