Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-DS3H
Processor: Core i5 4670K

PSU: Corsair TX650w How old is the PSU in your build and what did it power through out it's tenure? You will need to swap platforms. What sort of a budget do you have for said upgrade? Users should stylize their threads with info asked of in this thread; *How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice* How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice First off, respect where respect is due - this is an adaptation of the Animal's *How To Ask For New Build Advice* Sticky. I created this because there's a lot of posts nowadays asking for upgrade advice both on here and on the CPU forums, and I feel... forums. and the community will chime in with worthwhile suggestions.

Do you have any updates of Windows installed currently?
If not, you'll need to buy a retail version of Windows 11.
You might find discounts through your workplace, school, or company—don’t hesitate to inquire.
Avoid making online purchases that seem too good to be true; they could be scams or fake licenses, possibly pirated.

What is your real budget?
Win 11 compatibility begins with 8th Gen Intel.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/window...processors
Or similar era Ryzen.

It largely depends on your budget and specific needs. Which country are you in? If you're interested in gaming and your PSU isn't outdated, it might be possible to reuse it. You can retain your GPU, storage, case, and possibly the cooler if it fits a compatible bracket for your next setup. At the very least, you'll need a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Would you prefer to purchase everything new, or explore the used market? If you don't play games much and are aiming for cost savings, consider buying a used laptop from 2021 onward. You might also opt for an installation of Windows 11 that skips the hardware verification.

Yes, I use Windows 10. It seems around £300 would be reasonable. I'm particularly keen on EA FC 26 after the newest release. I think the PSU was purchased in 2012.

Similar comparisons could be made for the information provided. It's worth noting the higher cost of LGA 1700 compared to AM4 in the UK. For a price near £300, an I3 would be a more affordable alternative on an I5 platform.

The question asks about the power impact of a newer Core i3 compared to an older one, whether a £350 upgrade is worth it for delaying the next upgrade, the expected lifespan of a PSU given its age, and how well the system would handle audio software like Studio One.

An i3 12100 would operate in close proximity to your existing CPU. Make sure to swap the power supply.

An I3 12100 would completely ruin your CPU, being 50% quicker than the top processor for your socket, the 4790K, even after overclocking. It's older than an overclocked 8000 series core i5, easily surpassing it by more than double your current speed.
