Create AdviceHelp for new build projects
Hello All,
I’m planning to assemble a new PC in the coming weeks, but I’d like to place my order soon. I’ve already finalized some specifications and was seeking advice or tweaks. I’ve slightly exceeded my budget so far, and I still need to acquire additional cooling components and fans—I’m aiming to create my first custom loop myself. I plan to purchase that next month probably.
Here are a few points I have:
- PCP mentioned an error indicating an extra x16 slot is required, but I’m not sure why.
- PCP noted that the Zotac 4080 isn’t compatible with this case, though I’m still unsure about the reason. It seems to work with the Y70 case, which appears similar except for the front screen.
- I found a Gigabyte 4080 Aero OC priced slightly higher than the Zotac. Would that be a better option?
- Is the 850W 80plus gold sufficient? I was hoping for platinum, but the only white-cable model cost an extra £100.
- Would switching to an i5 with lower specs and reduced RAM (like the MSI Z790 Tomahawk) make a difference? It could save around £200.

I recommend using 7800X3D and keep this in mind: CPU Benchmarks and Hierarchy 2025: CPU Rankings We performed numerous CPU tests on both new and older Intel and AMD processors, compiling the rankings. Z790 is nearing end-of-life; upcoming models will need a different motherboard. Current slots won’t accommodate PCIe 5.0 SSDs. You can repurpose the waterblock for future upgrades to next-gen CPUs. The LGA 1851 socket (next-gen Intel connector) likely has a different die size and height, so it may not be optimized even with an adapter. The Hyte Y60 is suitable only for vertical GPU support; cards with more than three slots won’t fit. Given your choice of Corsair RGB, it might be wise to stay within one ecosystem: Waterblock - XC7 pro - £64 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Mi...23...7c24d40c3d&pd_rd_i=B09FXW9F3X&th=1 Pump combo - XD5 - £128 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Hy...e2...66bed142fa&pd_rd_i=B08HSQV5NZ&th=1 Top Radiator - Corsair XR5 360mm - £70 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-In...p/...B007P05XNC Side Radiator - Corsair XR5 240mm - £57 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-In...VS...05XNC?th=1 Waterblock for 4080 gaming X - £196 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Hydro-S...1e9cd&th=1 Core water cooling components total: 515 Changes suggested: Ryzen 7800X3D offers better cooling efficiency and lower power consumption. Wow, thanks for your thorough response! I plan to do some research on this. I switched from AMD after my old system overheated a lot, around 15-20 years ago, and have been using Intel ever since. If I remove the air cooler from the card, does the thickness of the slot still matter? Also, I was considering the Lian Li inf inf RGB model—it's pricey but looks great. What challenges might arise when mixing different ecosystems?
The 7800X3D operates more efficiently. Maximum power draw stays at 105W, and gaming tasks usually require around 80W. AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Review: A New Gaming Star Outperforms More Expensive CPUs Sub-$450 processors can be even quicker for gaming compared to the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Adding a water block transforms it into a two-slot setup; single-slot versions exist, but the Corsair model is two slots. Comparing other water-cooled Hyte Y60 systems online gives a clear picture of tube paths and the adapters or extenders needed. I recommend doing this comparison. Using Lian li fans may require special RGB firmware. They might also work with other RGB setups, though they would be tuned for Lian li’s software specifically. Corsair does not offer the side infinity mirror effect, so it’s likely those features won’t appear in their offerings.
Thanks again. Is it still worthwhile to get a PCIe 5 SSD/MMO in this situation? You mentioned a 4.
The Aorus Elite AX B650 accommodates PCIe 5.0 SSDs in the top port. The cost of these SSDs doesn't justify the value. For everyday tasks and gaming, PCIe 5.0 offers no advantage. I recommend waiting two years before considering it relevant. SSD Benchmarks Hierarchy 2025: We evaluated more than 100 SSD models recently, ranking them by performance. We organized them by storage capacity and then by speed.
