I've heard about ZeroTier. Therefore, with a "private network" both devices will perceive themselves as connected, making RDP feasible? (Also, take note of the comment above)

Yes, the same applies to Tailscale. My experience shows it is faster.
Again, I don’t have any experience with NordVPN’s MeshNet.

OK, so I'm thinking about using the VPN (like ZeroTier, MeshNet, or Tailscale) in that scenario. Thanks. Now the issue is how to log into the RDP with an MS account, such as [email protected]. From what I know, the "@contoso.com" part is treated similarly to contoso.com\example—it identifies the local account on the contoso.com network, not within a workgroup. Am I correct?

If the domain name is apex.local or apex.com and the username is tomcruise, the remote user must use the specified email addresses as the username and password when connecting via RDP within a virtual environment. This is due to the fact that PCs continuously broadcast their presence. The information isn't stored in any central location—perhaps just a host names cache—or in a database, even if a server exists on a Workgroup network. A domain maintains a registry of numerous network objects.
