Hey, I’m thinking about setting up five game servers on a single home machine. Someone suggested a dual socket mainboard with an Xeon X5675 processor and around 96GB of DDR3 ECC RAM. Does this sound like a solid plan? What alternatives should I consider?

I’d likely choose an R7 1700 or 2700 for around $100, with 32GB of RAM providing solid single-threaded speed. This setup offers better performance than the 3-3.5GHz Xeon models from 2011. ECC isn’t crucial here, though AM4 supports it without buffering on some boards.

I checked a low-power server setup with an i7 9700K and 16GB RAM. It ran smoothly at 0.5-1% CPU idle while I was present, but with 3.8GB RAM it felt tight. For a 5 Server version with 32 or 64GB RAM, it should handle the load better.
