I’d take that approach. I regret taking my time with the XT. I was eager, convincing myself I could always afford a hundred dollars for it, swap out half my RAM, and let my child upgrade to his own machine when he’s ready. Once I’m in the right mindset, I ran my 3770K at 4700mhz—it still performed well, though not as powerful as before.
With an RTX 3080, compare it to the i3-10100 (comparable to your 6700k). Your performance may match or even exceed expectations. Remember, a 3070 will be significantly more GPU constrained than the 3080. The 3800x could run smoother, but it won’t offer substantial noticeable improvements.
