on paper the upgrade path from 4c/8t to 8c/16t appears straightforward, especially with discounts available on eBay. However, I don’t have any non-gaming tasks and am just curious about the gaming perspective—would upgrading be worthwhile? The 6700k might be limiting my 3070, and online comparisons are a bit confusing.
Review benchmarks for the kinds of games or software you rely on. Certain titles require more processing power than others. A higher IPC can be beneficial, though it might only make a small difference.
Choose a solid motherboard and the 3700X if you can afford it.
I checked several spots and noticed slight differences in numbers. I'm not the most knowledgeable person around, so I might not be the best forum member. I mainly play single-player open-world games, but CSGO and Rocket League are my favorites.
6700K remains quite powerful. It likely offers more IPC than 3700X, though that might be misinterpreted. You could probably achieve a similar result with 6700K rather than 3700X. Unless your board lacks good connectivity options like NVMe, you might want to consider upgrading for better performance. I upgraded from a 3770K to a 3600XT—it wasn’t a huge jump, but it was still reasonable. I aimed for a 5600X, but I couldn’t find one.
6700k paired with a solid overclock (4.5-4.7ghz) will offer minor gains for certain titles, but not much beyond that. A 3070 won’t make a noticeable difference either. I’d prefer a bigger upgrade that improves overall performance. Options like 5600x or 5800x seem more promising.
