CPU voltage configurations
Checking the update when I'm back home, I noticed a BIOS release on January 25th, which isn't too long ago. I'm planning to update my BIOS since my current version is just before the new one. I'll also try disabling XMP and setting preferred cores to cache again, just like before. I'm hoping it works now because I ran every stress test and everything looks fine. I even reinstalled the first 4090 thinking it was the problem.
Would it make sense to test the vbios on the ASUS site? It was released around late 2022.
I’d prefer to focus only on ECC problems. Do you typically run background tasks that use hardware acceleration? Examples include game clients and Chrome. I sometimes face odd issues with certain games and background applications, like Chrome while a YouTube video plays. Otherwise, you’ll need to isolate variables or always use fullscreen windows. I’ve experienced frame time delays in fullscreen mode, but those have mostly been fixed recently. Adjusting Nvidia Control Panel settings—such as turning off v-sync—could help, as could disabling the iGPU. There are many factors to consider, especially with VGA-related settings. vBIOS is probably not worth it unless you’re sure; having two different versions adds safety. You might also try the built-in BIOS on your card, like Silent vs. Turbo modes or whatever Asus refers to. If you’re using a 12VHPWR/PCIe 5.0 setup, pin errors can occur, leading to problems like random fan speeds and crashes.
The 12VHPWR native behaves oddly, but if you have the adapter, it’s worth checking. Many power supplies with a native 12VHPWR also accept the 2x8pin to 12VHPWR configuration, which can resolve the unusual 'power loss' issues. I’ve only encountered this with the 1:1 cable myself—it’s something to experiment with.
Consider experimenting with those changes too. Your observation about core boosts being higher without PBO is interesting. Disabling it might help, though you should weigh the pros and cons. Setting BIOS to prioritize cache and stopping the AMD 3D VCache service could also be beneficial. Just make sure to test thoroughly and monitor performance impacts.
The B650 boards are indeed well constructed. At the time, my board was the most affordable option and still maintained a 7950X at full load for extended periods while keeping VRM's temperature below 80°C. That’s quite impressive for a budget model. I don’t have enough expertise to add anything to what @Agall has already covered, so it’s best left in his capable hands.
Are you wondering if DX12 titles occasionally freeze in fullscreen but function properly in windowed fullscreen?
