Hi, I purchased a 3900X and planned to check everything together with the motherboard, RAM, and power supply just to verify compatibility. I used the Wraith cooler but accidentally spilled thermal paste on the CPU pins and motherboard socket. I returned it to my retailer and received a refund. I’m not confident reapplying the wraith prism for testing because the mounting clamps are in a tricky, hard-to-access spot on my board—don’t want to smudge paste again. Now I’ve restocked the parts and have a question: Can I run a test with just an EK waterblock? Would that harm the CPU? That way I can safely take it out after booting up.
Processor is placed inside the socket prior to attaching the heat sink. If the heat sink shifts slightly while securing it, that’s typical—just aim to keep it straight. Ensure the clamp remains in the unlocked state when you fasten the arms onto the tabs, then gradually shift the lever into the locked position. Expect a slight "pressure" during tightening, which is normal clamping force. You may verify the CPU with a waterblock; ideally it should connect to a water loop to prevent overheating. If not dissipated properly, the heat block will become saturated.
Well ok, not to sound rude but i know how to install a cpu cooler, it's just that my motherboard has a huge heatsink and power delivery right above the PCI-e slot so i couldnt reach the second clamp without moving the heatsink around (hence the smudging of thermal compound. I also meant just attatching the waterblock to the cpu just to provide enough heat dissipation for a boot. for reference:
Which PCI-E port are you using? I noticed you only see memory slots and CPU sockets, but there’s a PCI-E slot near the back left. Could be a mix-up between RAM and the connection port? Let me know if you need help identifying it.
You could simply use thermal paste and attach the EK WB to test for posting. It might also work to boot directly into Windows if needed. Another approach is to repeatedly mist the CPU with compressed air from above, ensuring the cold paste reaches it.
