CPU TEMPS driving me crazy
CPU TEMPS driving me crazy
I believe this topic has already been discussed, but I want to clarify for myself. I'm using Core Temp and Speed Fan; the fan indicates the CPU is overheating at idle around 85°C, while Core Temp shows all cores are between 24°C and 31°C. Could you help me understand what's going on? Perhaps it's time to apply new thermal paste or adjust the settings?
I use the same processor and HWMonitor displays CPUTIN at 79 C and AUXTIN around 61 C. My core temps stay near 30 C. I’m unsure where the sensors are or if the software is reading them correctly, but the system works fine. Previously, when cooling failed, I saw 100 C and noticed throttling. Since these readings have been ongoing since the purchase, I don’t think the high numbers are a cause for worry.
Download HWMonitor to check compatibility with your Core Temp software. I just compare Core temp and HWMonitor for my CPU and they align well.
SPEEDFAN is usually inaccurate because it often makes guesses about which sensor to use, but these guesses are often incorrect.
CPUID's HWMonitor is the most reliable option.
Steer clear of SPEEDFAN in general; instead, use the built-in motherboard fan control software or check if the BIOS settings are adequate. If not, consider that an AIO might have its own control, or in the worst case, third-party fan hardware could be necessary.
Reduce fan speeds when unnecessary so the CPU doesn't consistently exceed about 75°C.
Thanks everyone, I got HWMonitor and its saying CPU is hovering around the 70c's. How do I add a photo, I took a snip of all three programs running side by side.
Edit, here is my attempt to add a photo, hope this works, and dosent give the world access to my One Drive. lol

While I reflect on this, I might need to reapply the thermal paste again. I placed a fresh layer on the CPU about two weeks ago, and I made a change that has been causing me concern. I lowered the pump slightly, shifted it a bit off-center, lifted it up, and then put it back in place. I suspect you shouldn’t press them together or move them around, as this could introduce air bubbles into the paste. That’s my reasoning at the moment.
The picture indicates hwmonitor reports the CPU at 36, but Cputin isn't the CPU itself. It's located under the motherboard and often those sensors can be disregarded since they display inaccurately. Cputin probably represents the VRM, and a reading of 70 is acceptable because it runs hotter than the CPU. I don't observe any issues with the temperatures.
I now understand what to focus on, and the speed fan isn't reliable for checking temperatures. Thank you for helping calm things down; I was planning to take out my pump and apply some fresh paste this afternoon, so I can enjoy some gaming instead.
