CPU temperature ranges between 88 and 89 degrees Celsius according to BIOS settings.
Hey there, I purchased a new PC from the Facebook marketplace for around 180 euros. The seller was selling it because it belonged to his brother and he uses a MacBook. It comes with an i5-6600 processor, a stock cooler, and an ASUS GTX 1060 with 6GB of RAM. The machine is a bit dusty, and I haven’t had much time to fix it properly, but I think the cooler might be loose. I tried some fixes by cleaning it and reapplying thermal paste, and maybe upgrading the cooler would help. I’ve noticed similar issues with an i7-6700 that stays at high temps—89°C or more. I’m worried it could fail. If anyone wants to assist with video calls, feel free to join my Discord. Let me know your thoughts!
Given the platform's age, it makes sense to refresh, reposition, and clean it up. Add to that the fact the stock cooler from that era was pretty poor—perfect conditions for a dusty mess. While you're working on it, double-check that the RAM slots are correct; they should be spaced out with room between the sticks.
Same temperatures during idle? Then provide a fresh and updated response.
I saw that too. Probably the reason for 1 being on 2133 and others at 2400 is what you’re seeing. I’ll repaste and get back to it—should I replace the cooler and which one? I need something effective but not expensive, around 40 euros or less. Also, what kind of thermal paste should I use? I’m a bit concerned after reading about temperature sensors or frying things. Plus, I don’t have an anti-static wristband, how can I protect it from damage? Thanks!
To prevent static buildup, regularly connect to a grounded surface while using the PC. A typical choice is the power supply unit—switched off for safety but still connected so the cable reaches ground. As long as humidity levels are moderate and you avoid carpet or thick socks, this should work without extra steps. I don’t need to stress too much about CPU thermal paste selection when overclocking isn’t an option; minor differences won’t impact performance. Opt for trusted brands like Arctic MX-4, MX-5, MX-6, Corsair TM30, Noctua NT-H1, etc. If you switch coolers, a simple single-tower air cooler will suffice—significantly better than the original. Pricing varies by location, but options like Thermalright Assassin X, ID-Cooling SE, Cooler Master Hyper 212, Vetroo V5 are affordable and compatible.
The Arctic P12 and P12 Max provide solid value with decent performance and minimal noise at an affordable price. I suggest choosing the PWM model to adjust fan speeds through BIOS or Windows software.
