Hello, I possess an Asus ROG gaming laptop (Model: GL712LW). It comes with an i7-10750H processor, RTX 2070 graphics, and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. For a while it performed well, except for some Asus software issues. Recently, when unplugged, the CPU clocked at .78Ghz. I discovered the problem to be DB PROCHOT, which throttling stopped working. Now, on battery power—especially when launching programs like Firefox—it drops back to .78Ghz, making the machine very sluggish. Disabling DB PROCHOT in throttlestop helped temporarily, but it doesn’t seem a lasting fix. Someone suggested changing a registry value, though I haven’t tested it thoroughly. Task Manager shows consistent 2.59Ghz readings, and Armoury reports 0Ghz. Microsoft’s response mentions disabling the Intel PPMC driver, which seems to control clock speeds. Should I attempt a BIOS update or is there another solution? I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks ahead. Edit: The laptop also works fine with power on.

The one and only fix for a BD PROCHOT throttling problem is using ThrottleStop to disable BD PROCHOT. Leave the registry alone. This is a common problem. As laptops get older, some cheap sensor on the motherboard will fail and it will start sending throttling messages to the CPU. Disabling BD PROCHOT prevents these external throttling messages from getting to the CPU. The CPU will still be able to thermal throttle if it ever gets too hot whether BD PROCHOT is checked or not. Why not? Many laptops would be in the trash if not for this simple and free software fix.

As laptops get older, some cheap sensor on the motherboard will fail and it will start sending throttling messages to the CPU. Disabling BD PROCHOT prevents these external throttling messages from getting to the CPU. The CPU will still be able to thermal throttle if it ever gets too hot whether BD PROCHOT is checked or not. Why not? Many laptops would be in the trash if not for this simple and free software fix.

I experienced a comparable problem with my previous Dell machine. Simply restarting or adjusting certain throttle settings to increase clock speed might be the solution. The Intel Speedstep could potentially be contributing to these issues—consider disabling it.

I believed there could be a drawback such as lack of thermal throttling, but it seems completely disconnected from CPU temperatures. Probably best to enable auto-start then. Appreciate the help!

BD PROCHOT and PROCHOT (processor hot) are distinct signals in Intel CPUs. BD PROCHOT enables external sensors to initiate throttling. Switching it on or off has no effect on the PROCHOT signal. PROCHOT is created internally. For safety, ThrottleStop does not offer a way to disable the PROCHOT processor hot signal.
