CPU PWM control ceased functioning following a Windows 11 reinstallation.
I prefer to run my PC quietly, using ASUS Armoury Crate for manual curve adjustments. After reinstalling Windows 11 (sorry Premiere!), I faced several sudden system crashes while gaming. After some observation, running benchmarks suggested the CPU fan wasn’t responding to the PWM settings. Even though the CPU warmed up to 80°C, the chassis fans kicked in, but the Noctua CPU fan kept at half speed. When I switched to constant RPM mode, it worked fine. After getting used to Armoury Crate—which felt really sloppy—I removed it and set up the fan curve in BIOS. Still, it didn’t fix the issue once I started Windows 11. I’m completely confused about this behavior and don’t know how to resolve it. Please help me out.
I completed the steps you outlined. Restarted the system and removed the Crate, along with related services. I’ll attempt the Fan Control and will update you.
Note: Setting the CPU fan to CPU-OPT didn’t resolve the issue.
Occasionally some desktops fail to recognize the CPU fan. PWM-DC could also be a concern. Lately, fans come with PWM (four-pin) and modern boards can detect them. However, I still rely on DC fans (three-pin) and must configure them as DC in the BIOS. Edited September 7, 2025 by leclod
All users prefer PWM settings, with manual adjustments made via PWM controls. FanControl functions correctly. It seems I'm adopting it as my permanent setting. The changes after a Windows reinstall didn't affect Armoury Crate's behavior—everything remained consistent before. The only change was the automatic installation of Crate through Windows instead of using an installer file.
Thanks for the update. Actually, I wasn't aware of FanControl; I thought the MB manufacturer's apps were the sole choice.
Armoury Crap is quite questionable, almost like malware. Delete it completely and add FanControl.
