Cpu overclock in gaming
Cpu overclock in gaming
Hi guys. I'm trying to figure this out. Sorry for my English.
I have an 8700k with 16GB RAM and 3200MHz. It's running a GTX 1070.
When I try to overclock the 8700k to 4.7GHz all cores, I don’t notice any improvement in gaming. I know it’s only a small increase, around 400MHz from stock, but others claim they get big gains in FPS. I see many YouTube videos showing up to 15-20 FPS with a 1080Ti (depending on the game). I know my GPU isn’t very powerful, but testing all settings in low should show some improvement like those videos. But I’m not seeing anything. I always get the same FPS. Before that, I had a 4790k and it was the same.
Can you help me understand what’s happening?
Hi checha_5,
One thing important to understand is that if the CPU is not bottlenecking your GPU (generally GPU not at 100%), overclock the CPU will not give you a massive improvement.
The 8700k is already a beast, there's not "real" need to overclock it. People (like me and other enthousiast) who overclock it just want to squeeze any MHz possible for the visual pleasure and a kind of satisfaction.

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, that is what I know. So, a 8700k bottleneck a 1080ti in ultra 1080p? Because in those videos people use 1080ti playing in ultra, even at 1440p they gain some fps, I don't think there is bottleneck with that hardware at 1440p ultra.
That's why I test with all settings in low with my 1070, to force more the CPU.
It's really weird, I'm so confused.
Absolutely, in certain games at 1080p even with ultra settings, the 1080ti can be too powerful to let the CPU render every frame (that's a bottleneck). At 1440p it varies, but overclocking the 8700k might improve performance by about 2-3%, which would result in around 4-5 FPS maximum. With the 1070, you should be able to set everything low and still experience a bottleneck if CPU usage reaches 100% on at least one core. Rodolphe.
I performed some tests and found my i7 performing similarly to an i5 8600k (disabling hyperthreading and setting all cores to 4.1ghz). I noticed a performance boost of 5-6 fps when I overclocked to 4.7ghz, likely due to a bottleneck. It seems I now understand better—definitely I need a more powerful GPU to see any improvement with the 8700k OC. A 1080 might work. I guess I’ll keep using this CPU for a while before upgrading.
